A burnt taste almost always means the wick is drying out faster than it can re-soak, whether that's an unprimed new coil, low e-liquid, chain vaping, wattage set too high, a worn-out coil, or the wrong VG/PG ratio for your hardware. This guide walks through the five-minute test that tells you dry hit from burnt hit, then gives the exact fix for each of the six causes above. What a Burnt Taste Actually Means
A burnt taste means your coil is firing without enough e-liquid soaking the wick. When the cotton inside the coil runs dry and you press the button or take a pull, the heat scorches the wick instead of vaporising liquid. That harsh, acrid hit is scorched cotton.
The good news: most of the time it is fixable. The bad news: sometimes the damage is done and the coil is finished.
Dry hit vs burnt hit
These two get lumped together, but they are not the same thing, and the difference decides whether you just need to rest the device or replace the coil.
- Dry hit: a temporary harsh puff caused by the wick momentarily running low on liquid. Let the coil sit for a few minutes to re-saturate, and the flavour can come back.
- Burnt hit: the wick has actually scorched. That taste is then baked in. Resting will not fix it, and no amount of topping up the tank brings the flavour back. The coil needs replacing.

The 30-second checklist
Before you write off a coil, run through this:
- Is the tank or pod running low? Low liquid is the number one cause of a dry wick. Top it up.
- Did you just fit a new coil? It needs priming and a few minutes to soak before the first pull.
- Are you chain vaping? Firing pull after pull outpaces how fast the wick can re-wet. Slow down.
- Is your power set too high? Too many watts burns liquid faster than the wick can feed it.
- Rest it, then test. Five minutes standing upright, then a gentle draw. Cleared up means dry hit. Still burnt means new coil.

Wicking
Wicking is how the cotton inside the coil pulls e-liquid in to be vaporised. Pull on a fresh, primed coil and the cotton is saturated. The wire fires, vaporises the liquid against it, and the cotton draws fresh juice in from the pod ready for the next puff.

Power & Heat
When activated, the vape's battery supplies electrical power to the coil, rapidly heating it to between 200°C and 250°C. This intense heat then instantly vaporizes the e-liquid soaked into the cotton wick, creating the vapor you inhale.

Vapour
The user then inhales the vapour, which carries the flavour and nicotine. The density, warmth, and size of your vapor clouds depend entirely on the power running through your coil combined with the VG/PG ratio of your e-liquid.
Why a Brand-New Coil or Pod Tastes Burnt
If your vape tastes burnt straight out of the packet, the coil almost certainly never got the chance to soak. An unprimed new coil is the single biggest cause of a burnt taste on fresh hardware, and it is why "why does my vape taste burnt with new coil" is one of the most searched vaping problems in the UK. The fix is simple and it takes two minutes.
A dry wick is the culprit. Fire a coil before the cotton is properly saturated and you scorch it. That damage is permanent, the burnt taste never fully clears, and you are back to fitting another coil. Prime it right the first time and you dodge the whole thing.
Priming
Priming means getting e-liquid into the wick before any power hits it. New coils and new pods arrive bone dry. Drop them straight into a full tank, hit the fire button, and the cotton has not had time to draw liquid up. The metal heats, the dry cotton chars, and that is the burnt hit.
In our own testing, priming a mesh coil for a good five minutes before the first pull is the single biggest thing that stops a burnt first hit. It is the step most people skip, and it is the one that matters most.
How to prime a coil vs a pod
The method is broadly the same, with a small tweak depending on your hardware. Follow the manufacturer's priming spec for your specific coil, but the general routine is:
- Manually wet the wicking ports. Drip a few drops of e-liquid directly into the exposed cotton holes on the side of the coil, or into the pod's fill window over the wick.
- Fill the tank or pod as normal.
- Let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes before you fire. Higher-VG shortfills are thicker and take longer at the top of that range, thinner 50/50 salts wick faster.

The primer-puff technique
Once the coil has soaked, a few primer puffs pull liquid deeper into the wick before you commit to a proper vape. Take three or four slow draws with no power, just inhaling to pull liquid through, or fire on the lowest wattage your device allows.
The idea is to encourage juice into the coil without heating a dry spot. Keep the first proper puffs gentle and at lower power, then build up as the flavour comes through clean. If the first draw already tastes off, stop and give it longer to soak rather than pushing through it, because once the cotton scorches there is no going back.

The 6 Most Common Causes (and Their Fixes)
Most burnt tastes come down to one thing: the coil's cotton drying out faster than liquid can soak back into it. Get that relationship right and the harshness disappears. Here are the six culprits we see most often, with the fix for each.
Chain vaping too fast
Rapid back-to-back pulls don't give the wick time to re-saturate. The cotton dries between puffs, and the next hit lands on dry fibres. Pause 15 to 30 seconds between draws and the wick refills properly. This is one of the simplest ways to make a vape not taste burnt, and it costs you nothing.
E-liquid running low
Vaping below the minimum liquid line starves the wick. If you've ever asked why your vape juice tastes burnt when the tank looks nearly empty, that's the answer. The cotton is drawing air instead of liquid. Keep the tank or pod above a third full and top up before it runs dry.
Wattage set too high
Every coil has a wattage range printed on it, and that figure is a manufacturer spec, not a suggestion. Push past it and you burn the cotton faster than the liquid can wick in. Start at the low end of the range and work up until the flavour is full without any harshness. If your ecig coil always tastes burnt at your usual setting, drop the wattage a few points.
Coil worn out
Coils are consumables. The cotton breaks down with heat and use, and no amount of priming brings a spent one back. Wrong VG/PG ratio for your coil
Thick high-VG liquid can't wick fast enough through the tight cotton channels of a small MTL pod coil, so it scorches. The rule is straightforward:
- MTL pods and higher-ohm coils want thinner 50/50 liquid
- Sub-ohm tanks and low-ohm mesh want high-VG 70/30

Sweet e-liquids caramelising the wick
This one gets under-explained everywhere. Heavy sweeteners, the kind you find in dessert, custard and candy flavours, don't fully vaporise. They caramelise onto the coil and cotton, building a dark residue that tastes burnt long before the wick itself is spent. Nothing wrong with sweet juice, we vape plenty of it, but expect to change coils more often. Rotating a lighter fruit or menthol between sweet tanks keeps the wick cleaner for longer.

Device-Specific Troubleshooting (Pods, Sub-Ohm & Disposables)
Where the burnt taste comes from depends on the device in your hand. A refillable pod, a sub-ohm tank and a disposable each fail in their own way, and the fixes are different. Refillable pod kits (XROS, Caliburn, Xlim)
Start with the mechanical basics before you blame the coil.
- Check the pod is fully seated. On kits like the Vaporesso XROS, Uwell Caliburn and Oxva Xlim, the pod should click home with a firm push. A pod that is half in makes poor contact, the coil misfires, and you get a dry, scorched pull.
- Reseat or re-prime the coil. If your pod has a replaceable coil, make sure it is pushed fully into the pod before you fill. Then let it stand five minutes.
- Match your liquid to the coil. This is the one most switchers get wrong. Low-wattage MTL pod coils, the sort rated around 0.8 to 1.2 ohm, are built for 50/50 liquids and nic salts. Feed them a high-VG 70/30 shortfill and the thick liquid struggles to wick fast enough, the cotton runs dry, and it tastes burnt. Across the mesh coils we stock, 0.8 ohm pods are the sweet spot most of our customers settle on for 50/50 salts.

Sub-ohm tanks & mods
Sub-ohm setups give you more to play with, which means more ways to dry a wick out.
- Airflow. Wide open airflow pulls more vapour and more heat through the coil, and it dries the wick faster than most people realise. If you are chain-vaping with the airflow fully open, close it down a touch and give the wick time to catch up.
- Wattage. Run inside the range printed on the coil. Push a 0.6 ohm mesh coil past its ceiling and you will outpace the wicking every time, which reads as a burnt note on the exhale.
- Liquid. Sub-ohm mesh coils want higher-VG liquid. A thin 50/50 in a high-power tank can flood and spit, while a proper 70/30 keeps the wick fed. We run sub-ohm tanks in the evenings, so this is the kit we live with.
Disposables and big-puff bars
Disposables and pod bars cannot be re-wicked. There is no coil to swap and no cotton to save.
- A burnt taste near the end usually means the device is spent. Once the wick is dry, that is the device telling you the liquid is gone, even if it still fires.
- Resting it can buy a few final puffs. Set it down for ten or fifteen minutes and any liquid clinging to the reservoir may creep back toward the wick. That earns you a handful of extra pulls, not a revival.
- If it tastes burnt from the first puff on a fresh device, that is a wicking fault out of the box rather than an empty tank. We have seen more switchers move from big-puff disposables to refillable pods in our own shop data, and this is one of the reasons why: a refillable coil is a fixable problem, a dead disposable is not.
Burnt Taste in Specific UK Devices & Brands
Every device has its own quirks, but the burnt taste almost always traces back to the same handful of causes. Here is how they show up across the kit we see most in the UK.
Elux, Hayati Pro Max & Lost Mary BM6000
Big-puff disposables and reusable disposables like the Hayati Pro Max, Elux and Lost Mary BM6000 run an auto-draw at a fixed wattage. You do not control the power, so a burnt taste rarely means a settings problem. It usually means one of two things:
- The device is running low. As the e-liquid depletes, the wick dries out and you get that harsh, scorched pull. On a big-puff device this is the most common cause by a mile.
- You are chain vaping too fast. Hammer a fixed-wattage disposable with back-to-back pulls and the wick cannot re-saturate in time. Space out your draws and give it 15 to 20 seconds between pulls.
If your Elux, Hayati Pro Max or BM6000 tastes burnt and it is not near empty, slow down and let it rest for a couple of minutes. Nine times out of ten that sorts it. If the taste persists on a device you know is fresh, it is a duff unit rather than anything you have done wrong.
Vuse & SMOK
Vuse runs closed pods, so there is no coil to prime and no juice to refill. A burnt taste from a Vuse ePod or ePen almost always means a spent pod. You replace it rather than fix it. Some vapers find a pod develops a vacuum before it is truly empty, which starves the coil, but the practical answer on a closed system is the same: swap it out.
SMOK pods, whether on a Nord, Novo or similar kit, are a different story because you refill them and often choose your coil. Two things to check:
- Coil resistance versus your wattage. SMOK pods take coils of different resistances. Run a 0.8 ohm coil at the wattage meant for a 0.4 ohm and you will scorch it. Match the coil to the printed wattage range on the coil itself.
- Re-prime after every refill. Drop a little e-liquid straight onto the exposed cotton, fill the pod, then leave it a good five minutes before the first pull. Skipping that soak on a fresh SMOK pod is the most common reason customers tell us their first draw tastes scorched.
OXVA Xlim & pod-kit specifics
The OXVA Xlim range is one of the most popular refillable pod kits we stock, and burnt taste on an Xlim usually comes down to priming and coil choice.
- Match the coil to your e-liquid. The Xlim pods come in different resistances. Higher-resistance pods (around 0.8 ohm) suit 50/50 salts, while the lower-resistance options want thinner higher-VG juice and more airflow.
- Re-prime after refilling. Same rule as any pod: wet the cotton, fill, wait. Skip this and you will burn the wick on the first draw.
- Do not run it dry. The Xlim has good juice feed, but keep the pod topped up. Let the level drop below the coil intake holes and you will taste it.

Across all of these, the fix is the same idea: keep the wick wet, match the coil to the power, and do not run the device dry. Get those three right and burnt hits become rare.
Why It Tastes Burnt After Charging
The charge itself does not scorch your coil. If your vape tastes burnt right after it comes off the charger, the coil was almost certainly already on its way out, or you drew too hard too soon.
The post-charge power surge myth
Plenty of vapers assume a full battery pushes more power through the coil and cooks the wick. That is not how these devices work. A regulated pod or sub-ohm kit fires at the same wattage whether the battery reads 100% or 20%, so a fresh charge does not suddenly overload the coil.
What a full charge does change is battery temperature. Batteries run slightly warm off the charger, and if you chain-vape straight away on a coil that is already worn, that warmth just makes the existing dry-wick problem more obvious.
What's really happening
Nine times out of ten it is one of two things:
- The coil was already worn. If a coil is a couple of weeks old and starting to taste muted, the burnt note after charging is just the coil finally giving up, not the charge causing it.
- Chain-vaping before the wick re-saturated. If you left the device sitting while it charged, the wick can dry slightly at the top. Hammer it with a full draw and you get that burnt catch on the throat.
The fix is simple:
- Let the device rest for a minute after you unplug it so the battery is not warm.
- Take a slow, gentle primer puff first, no button or a light draw, to pull juice back into the wick.
- Then go in with a normal draw.
If it still tastes burnt after a rest and a primer puff, the charge was never the issue. The coil or pod has run its course and it is time for a fresh one.
How to Prevent Burnt Taste (and Make Coils Last Longer)
Most burnt hits come down to a coil that ran dry before it should have. Match your coil to your liquid, prime properly, and chain-vape less, and a good mesh coil will happily last one to two weeks in day-to-day use. Here is where the biggest longevity gains actually come from.
Mesh vs traditional coils and burnt-taste risk
Mesh coils are the easier ride if you want to avoid burnt hits. A mesh coil is a single perforated strip of metal, so it heats evenly across its whole surface. A traditional round-wire coil heats in a tighter spiral, which creates hotspots, and hotspots are exactly where a dry burn starts.
- Even heat means the wick stays saturated across more of the coil, so it tolerates a hard pull better.
- Lower burnt-taste risk because there is no single overheating point drying out the cotton.
- Better flavour on the same liquid, which is why nearly everything we stock has moved to mesh.
Most customers running 50/50 nic salts settle on a mesh pod coil around 0.8 ohm, and it is a sensible default if you are not sure where to start. If you are still running an older round-wire pod and getting regular burnt hits, a mesh replacement is usually the fix.
Temperature control mode
Temperature control (TC) mode is the closest thing to a burnt-hit safety net, and it is criminally underused. On a compatible mod, TC caps the coil at a temperature you set. When the wick runs dry, the coil temperature spikes fast, and TC simply cuts the power before it scorches the cotton. No dry burn, no acrid throat hit.
Two things to know:
- TC only works with the right coil material, usually nickel, titanium or stainless steel. A standard kanthal coil will not read temperature.
- It is a feature on box mods and some higher-end sub-ohm kits, not on pod kits or disposables.
If your evening sub-ohm setup supports it, dial in a sensible ceiling and you will feel it kick in the moment a coil gets thirsty.
Nic salts vs freebase and coil life
The liquid you run matters as much as the coil. Nic salt liquids are usually higher-PG and thinner, so they wick easily into the small coils inside pod kits. Thick high-VG freebase shortfills are a different animal: they wick slowly, and in a tiny pod coil they can starve the wick and cause a burnt taste even when the pod is full.
The rule we work to:
- Salts and 50/50 liquids for pod kits and coils above 0.8 ohm. Thin, fast-wicking, forgiving.
- High-VG shortfills for sub-ohm tanks with big wicking ports and coils under 0.6 ohm. Those coils are built to pull thick juice.

Storage and shelf-life of spare coils
A fresh coil is not always a healthy coil. Store spares badly and they can taste burnt from the very first pull.
- Keep them sealed in their original packaging until you fit them. Air and moisture degrade the cotton over time.
- Away from heat and sunlight. A coil that has cooked in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill can arrive pre-degraded.
- Do not part-soak a coil and leave it. A wick that sat wet then dried out will carry a scorched note before you have even vaped it.

Frequently Asked Questions
This almost always means the coil wasn't primed properly before use. Drip e-liquid directly into the wicking ports and let it sit for 5-10 minutes so the cotton fully saturates, then take a few slow, low-power primer puffs before firing at full wattage. It's also worth double-checking the coil is actually rated for the wattage you're running, as pushing a coil too hard before it's wicked will scorch it instantly.
Even pre-filled pods and disposables need a few minutes for the wick to properly saturate, so resting the device before your first puff makes a real difference. Chain vaping straight away is another common culprit, as it doesn't give the wick time to keep up. On rare occasions a coil leaves the factory slightly degraded, in which case a replacement or exchange sorts it out.
Most of the time the coil was already near the end of its life and charging just happened to coincide with that. Firing rapid puffs on a freshly charged, warm battery can also dry the wick out faster than usual. Let the device rest for a minute after charging and take one slow primer puff before going back to your normal vaping pace.
A brief dry hit from an under-primed wick will usually recover once you let the coil rest and re-saturate with e-liquid. A genuinely scorched coil, where the cotton has actually charred, is permanent and no amount of resting will bring the flavour back. Disposables fall into this second category too, as there's no way to re-wick them once they're spent.
Running high wattage, using very sweet e-liquids, or chain vaping all shorten a coil's life dramatically. Thick high-VG liquid can also struggle to wick fast enough in a small pod coil, leaving it starved between puffs. Switching to a mesh coil, dropping your wattage slightly, and choosing a less-sweetened liquid all help coils last noticeably longer.
In most cases the e-liquid is running low and the wick has started to dry out, which is common as a disposable nears the end of its puff count. Puffing too quickly one after another can also cause a temporary burnt taste, so resting it for 30 seconds between draws is worth trying first. If the burnt taste won't go away, the disposable can't be re-wicked and is simply finished.
These larger-capacity bars run at a fixed wattage, so a burnt taste usually points to low e-liquid or puffing faster than the wick can keep up with. Pausing for 30 seconds between draws often clears it up. If the burnt taste persists and you're getting close to the advertised puff count, the device has reached the end of its life.
Always prime new coils fully and never fire a tank or pod that's run dry, as this is the single biggest cause of burnt hits. Stick within the coil's rated wattage range and pause briefly between puffs rather than chain vaping. Choosing mesh coils, matching your VG/PG ratio to the coil type, and avoiding heavily-sweetened e-liquids all reduce the chances of a burnt taste creeping in.
