Why Is My Vape Leaking?
Most vape leaks come down to one of six things: overfilling, a flooded coil, the wrong VG/PG ratio, a worn O-ring or seal, the wrong wattage, or storing the device on its side. The good news is that five of those six are quick, free fixes you can sort out at the kitchen table. The trick is reading the leak before you start pulling the tank apart.
We vape every day and we test what we sell before it goes on the shelf, so we have seen every one of these on the bench. The single most useful clue is where the juice is coming from. Once you know that, you know the likely cause.
The 6 most common causes at a glance
- Overfilling - excess liquid has nowhere to go but out of the airflow.
- Flooded coil - too much juice pooling in the coil chamber, often from soft or repeated draws.
- Wrong VG/PG ratio - thin, high-PG liquid seeping through a coil built for thicker juice.

Leaking from the air holes This is the most common complaint we hear. It usually means a flooded coil or an overfilled tank, with excess liquid escaping through the airflow.

Not every leak is fixable, mind. A transient leak comes from how you filled, fired or stored the device, and that is on you to correct. A structural leak, like a cracked pod housing or a split tank, means the part has failed and needs replacing. Why Is My Vape Leaking Juice Into My Mouth?
Juice in the mouth almost always means a flooded coil. There is too much liquid sitting on the wick and not enough vapour being produced to burn it off, so the excess gets pulled straight up the chimney and into your mouth on the inhale. It tastes horrible and it catches every vaper out at some point.
Flooded coil explained
The wick inside your coil soaks up e-liquid, and the coil turns that liquid into vapour when you fire. Flooding happens when the balance tips: more liquid arrives at the wick than the coil can vapourise. The surplus pools in the coil housing and the chimney, then works its way up the mouthpiece.
Common triggers we see:
- Chain-vaping. Firing puff after puff floods the wick faster than the coil can clear it. Pause 15 to 30 seconds between pulls to let the coil catch up and cool.
- Priming too hard. Squeezing extra drops onto a wick that is already saturated leaves nowhere for the liquid to go.
- A brand new coil settling in. Fresh wicks are fully soaked, so the first few pulls can spit a little before things balance out.
- Sucking too hard on an auto-draw device. A sharp, forceful pull drags liquid past the coil before it can be vapourised.
How to clear a flooded coil
The fix is quick and you rarely need to change the coil. Try these in order:
- Take a few short primer puffs without firing. Draw air through the device with the button unpressed to pull the excess liquid off the wick.
- Tip the mouthpiece down onto a tissue and give the device a gentle flick or tap. Gravity does most of the work, and the tissue catches the runoff.
- Fire briefly with the airflow fully open, in short one-second bursts, to burn off the pooled liquid. A gurgling or spitting sound means it is still clearing.

Disposables leaking into your mouth
Disposables and sealed puff bars flood for the same core reason, but you cannot swap the coil, so prevention matters more. A disposable leaking juice into your mouth usually comes down to one of three things:
- Over-saturated cotton. The internal wick holds a fixed amount of liquid, and if it is sitting fully soaked with nowhere to breathe, the excess ends up in the mouthpiece.
- Cold liquid thinning out. E-liquid runs thinner when it is cold, so it wicks faster than the coil can keep up. A device left in a chilly car or bag overnight is a prime offender.
- Firing too rapidly. Rapid back-to-back puffs overwhelm the wick, exactly like chain-vaping a refillable.
To clear a disposable, tip the mouthpiece down, tap it gently onto tissue, and take a couple of slow, gentle draws without inhaling deeply. Let it warm to room temperature before you use it, and space your puffs out. Leaking From the Air Holes or Bottom: Fill, Coil & Thread Fixes
If juice is weeping from the air holes or pooling under your device, the cause is almost always mechanical: how you filled it, how the coil sits, or how the threads mate. All three are fixable in under a minute, no new parts needed.
Filling your tank or pod correctly
Overfilling is the number one reason a vape leaks from the air holes. Every tank and pod is designed with a central airflow tube (the chimney) running up through the middle. That tube carries vapour to your mouth and must stay dry. Fill to the brim and you leave no air gap, so the liquid has nowhere to expand into and gets forced straight down the chimney and out the air holes at the base.
Get it right every time:
- Leave a small air gap at the top when you fill, roughly a few millimetres. That gap holds the negative pressure that keeps liquid in the reservoir.
- Aim for the outer edge, tilting the tank and running liquid down the glass or pod wall, not the central tube.
- Never pour into the chimney. A single drop down that centre tube will run out of the airflow and into your mouth or onto your battery.
- Wipe any spillage off the threads and airflow before you screw things back together.

Coil not seated properly
Leaking from the bottom, rather than the air holes, usually points to the coil. If a coil is not pushed or screwed fully home, liquid slips past the seals and pools underneath the tank or in the base of your device.
On a sub-ohm tank, the coil screws into the base. Hand-tighten it until it is snug, then check the tank hasn't come loose from the mod. On a refillable pod, the coil either presses into the pod or clicks into a fixed housing. Press firmly and evenly until you feel it seat properly.
One step people skip: let the coil absorb liquid before you fire it. Manufacturer instructions typically ask for five to ten minutes of soak time on a fresh coil. In our own testing, priming a mesh coil for a good five minutes before the first pull is the single biggest thing that stops a burnt first hit, and a properly wicked coil is far less prone to weeping too. A dry coil can flood because the wick isn't yet drawing liquid at the rate it arrives.
Cross-threaded or loose coils
Force a coil in at an angle and you cross-thread it. The seal never sits flush, and juice runs straight out the bottom. This is a common cause of a vape leaking juice from the bottom on threaded sub-ohm tanks.
The fix is gentle:
- Hand-tighten only. If it resists after a turn or two, back it off completely and start again, keeping it dead straight.
- Never force it. Cross-threading damages the seal and can wreck the base thread on the coil or tank.
- Check the O-rings on the coil are all present and not pinched before you refit.
- Snug is the target, not gorilla-tight. Overtightening splits O-rings and causes its own leaks.

The Wrong E-Liquid: VG/PG Ratio and Coil Match
Nine times out of ten, a vape leaking juice for no obvious reason comes down to a mismatch between your liquid and your coil. High-PG liquid in a sub-ohm coil
Thin liquid floods thirsty coils. That is the whole mechanism in one line.
High-PG juice (50/50 or anything with more PG) is runny. Pour that into a low-resistance sub-ohm coil built for thick, syrupy high-VG liquid and it soaks through the wicking faster than it can be vaporised. The excess has nowhere to go but out of the airflow holes and into your mouth.
Nic salts in a high-power sub-ohm coil is the classic version of this mistake. Salts are almost always 50/50, designed for tight MTL pods running low power. Drop them into a big DTL tank at 40 watts and you get a leaky, flooded mess, plus a nicotine hit far harsher than the strength suggests.
Signs you have a ratio mismatch:
- Juice pooling in the airflow within minutes of filling
- Gurgling and spitback on the inhale
- Liquid creeping up into your mouth despite everything being seated properly
- Coil drinking through juice at an alarming rate
Matching ratio to your device
Match the liquid to the resistance and the leaks stop. The convention is simple:
- MTL pod devices and low-power kits: 50/50 liquid or nic salts. These want a thinner juice that wicks easily through tight, high-resistance coils.
- DTL sub-ohm tanks: 70/30 VG or higher. The thicker liquid keeps pace with a low-resistance mesh coil pulling serious wattage.
As a rough rule of thumb, anything under 0.6 ohm wants a high-VG shortfill. Anything at 1.0 ohm or above is happy on 50/50 salts. Worn O-Rings, Seals & Damaged Pods: When to Repair vs Replace
Sometimes the leak is not your fill technique or your coil. It is the rubber. O-rings and silicone seals do the quiet work of keeping e-liquid where it belongs, and they wear out long before most vapers think to check them.
Before you write off a tank or pod, work out which of three things you are dealing with:
- Coil flooding: liquid pools in the airflow or spits into your mouth, usually right after a fill or a hard pull. Sorts itself with a fresh coil, a gentler draw or a longer prime.
- Seal failure: a slow, persistent seep from a threaded join or around the base, even when the device sits untouched. Points to a dried, split or dislodged O-ring.
- Physical damage: liquid runs out no matter what you do, and it keeps coming. That is a crack or a split, and no fix will save it.

Checking and replacing O-rings
Rubber seals are consumables, same as coils. Over months of screwing and unscrewing tanks, refilling and general handling, they dry out, harden, split or work loose from their groove. A hardened seal no longer compresses tight, so liquid finds the gap.
Give yours a proper look when you strip the device down to clean it:
- Inspect every O-ring for cracks, flat spots, tears or a chalky, dried-out finish.
- Reseat any ring that has crept out of its groove. Sometimes a leak is just a seal that has slipped, not failed.
- Replace the split or perished ones. Most tanks and pod systems ship spare O-rings in the box or in a fresh coil pack, so check there before buying anything.
A smear of the e-liquid you already have on a stubborn ring helps it slide back into place cleanly. Do not force a dry seal into a groove, you will only tear it.

Cracked tanks and split pods
This is the one nobody wants to hear: some leaks cannot be fixed at all. A hairline crack in a glass tank or a split in a plastic pod housing will weep e-liquid indefinitely, and no amount of tightening, reseating or fresh coils will stop it.
Cracks hide well. Hold the empty tank or pod up to the light and check for:
- Fine lines in the glass, especially near the threads where it screws in.
- Stress marks or splits along the seams of a plastic pod.
- A join that looks fine dry but seeps the moment it is filled.
Glass tanks crack from a knock, an over-tightened top cap or being dropped. Plastic pods split from repeated refilling and pocket pressure. Once the housing is compromised, the only fix is a replacement tank glass or a new pod. The good news is spare glass and multipacks of pods are cheap and easy to get hold of.
Spotting a genuine defect
Not every leak is your fault. If a pod or tank leaks straight from the packet, with no overfilling, no dropping and no misuse, you may simply have a defective unit. It happens, even with the top-tier brands.
The tell-tale signs of a factory fault:
- Leaking on the very first fill, before the device has done anything to earn it.
- A visibly misaligned seal or a coil that will not seat properly out of the box.
- Liquid appearing where the housing has clearly not been assembled correctly.

Temperature, Pressure & Storage
Most leak guides stop at coils and O-rings. The truth is that where you keep your vape, how hot it gets, and even the air pressure around it all push liquid where it shouldn't go. Sort these out and you'll fix leaks that seem to happen for no reason at all.
Storing your vape flat vs upright
Lay a tank or pod on its side and gravity does the rest. Liquid drifts down into the airflow channel, saturates the coil past what it can wick, and seeps out the air holes. You come back to a puddle and no idea why.
The fix is simple: store your device upright, mouthpiece pointing up. That keeps the liquid sitting over the coil where it belongs and away from the airflow. It matters most overnight and any time the device is idle for a few hours.
- Upright, mouthpiece up: liquid stays put, airflow stays dry
- On its side or upside down: juice migrates into the air holes and out
Heat, cold and liquid viscosity
Temperature changes the way e-liquid behaves, and both extremes cause grief.
Heat thins your e-liquid and expands the air trapped inside the tank. Thinner liquid floods the coil faster than it can vape off, and expanding air pushes juice out through any gap it can find. A vape left on a sunny windowsill or in a hot car will leak, gurgle, and sometimes spit hot juice up the chimney.
Cold does the opposite. It thickens the liquid, especially higher-VG shortfills, so the coil struggles to draw it up. That's when you get gurgling, flooding, and juice pooling because the wick can't keep pace.
Seasonal habits help here:
- Summer: never leave a device in a hot car or in direct sun
- Winter: let a cold device and liquid warm to room temperature before you vape, and give it a gentle shake

Altitude & flying
Cabin pressure is the classic hidden cause. As the plane climbs, the air pressure around your tank drops while the air sealed inside stays put. That trapped air expands and forces liquid straight out through the coil and airflow. It's why a tank that's been fine all week suddenly leaks in your bag at 35,000 feet.
To stop your vape leaking on a plane:
- Empty the tank or pod before you fly if you can
- If you'd rather not empty it, make sure it's filled and sealed tight, with no air gap
- Store the device upright in your carry-on, mouthpiece up
- Never pack a vape in checked hold luggage, airline rules require it in the cabin with you

Most brand-specific leaks come down to device type rather than the badge on the front. Pod kits leak at the pod-to-battery connection. Sub-ohm tanks leak at the coil seating. Disposables leak because they have been over-fired or cooked in a hot car. Match the device to the fix below and you will sort the vast majority of them.

A few brand notes worth keeping in mind:
- Pod-based kits (Vaporesso XROS, OXVA Xlim, Lost Mary refillables): pop the pod out and reseat it. The magnetic connection needs a clean, dry contact to sit flush, so wipe both faces with a bit of kitchen roll. If it still weeps, you are almost certainly overfilling. Disposable-specific leak fixes
Disposables give you the least to work with. There is no coil to reseat and no pod to refill, so your options are limited to how you handle the thing.
- Ease off the button or the draw. Long, hard pulls flood the wick faster than it can vapourise. Shorter, gentler pulls stop juice pooling at the mouthpiece.
- Keep it cool. Heat thins the e-liquid and expands the air inside, and both push juice out. Do not leave a Foger, IVG, Crossbar or PIXL 6000 on a sunny windowsill or in the car.
- Store it upright. Mouthpiece up, the same as any device.
- Accept some are just faulty. If a disposable leaks straight out of the wrapper, that is a factory defect, not something you have done. There is no realistic user fix for a bad seal inside a sealed unit, so take it back to where you bought it.

How to Stop Your Vape Leaking: Prevention Checklist
Most leaks come down to habits, not hardware. Sort these out and the puddle in your bag or pocket largely disappears. Nail the priming step in particular, because it is the one most people skip and the one that quietly ruins coils and lets liquid seep where it should not.
Priming and setup done right
Priming a new coil or pod before the first pull is the single most-missed step we see. Skip it and dry cotton pulls liquid through too fast, floods the coil, and gives you both a burnt taste and a leak.
- Prime every new coil. Drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton, refit it, fill the tank or pod, then leave it to sit for a good five minutes. In our own testing, that five-minute wait is the biggest single thing that stops a burnt first hit.
- Fill with an air gap. Leave a small pocket of air at the top rather than filling to the brim. That gap keeps internal pressure balanced so liquid does not get forced out of the airflow.
- Avoid the centre tube. When you fill a sub-ohm tank, keep liquid out of the central airflow chimney. Juice down that tube goes straight to your mouth.
- Hand-tighten coils and bases. Firm but not forced. Cross-thread or over-tighten and you crush the seals; under-tighten and liquid weeps from the base threads.
- Match liquid to coil. A high-VG shortfill in a fine MTL coil is asking for leaks. Thin 50/50 in a big mesh coil floods it. Pair the ratio to the coil and most seepage stops.
Daily habits that prevent leaks
Small routines make the difference between a clean tank and a sticky mess.
- Store it upright. Lay a device on its side or leave it face down and liquid works its way toward the airflow. Standing up is the safest position, especially overnight.
- Keep it out of the heat. A hot car or a sunny windowsill thins the e-liquid and expands the air inside the tank, which forces juice out. Room temperature is your friend.
- Take slow, steady puffs. Short, sharp, aggressive pulls drag more liquid than the coil can vape, so it pools and leaks. An unhurried draw does the job better anyway.
- Close the airflow for MTL. If you vape mouth-to-lung, adjust the airflow ring toward closed. A tighter draw reduces the pressure pulling liquid through, and it suits salts better too.
