The Coolfire Z80 NEX is a single-battery box mod for people who like to set their own power. It arrives as a mod only, so you add your own tank, fill it with your own e-liquid and fit a battery before you start.

You dial the output anywhere from 6W up to 80W and the chipset holds it steady as the battery drops. How the draw feels comes down to the tank and coil you pair with it. It suits vapers who already run sub-ohm or RDL tanks and want a compact, fine-tuneable power source. It comes in Black, Gradient Blue, Gunmetal, Purple, Silver and Turquoise.

What it does well

• Fine power control: below 20W it moves in 0.5W steps, and from 20W to 80W it moves in 1W steps, so you can dial in a coil precisely.
• Clear colour screen: the 0.96-inch TFT display shows wattage, coil resistance, battery level and other readings at a glance.
• Steady output: the smart chipset keeps power consistent even when the battery is running low, so the last stretch of a charge feels like the first.
• Pocket-friendly lock: a slide-type manual lock switch stops the fire button being pressed by accident in a bag or pocket.
• Simple power source: it runs on one replaceable 18650 battery (not included) and recharges over USB-C.
• Solid build: zinc alloy, PCTG and leather make up the body.

Pods, coils and e-liquid match

This is a tank mod, not a pod system, so it takes sub-ohm and RDL tanks such as the Innokin Zenith II. Innokin says the NEX range works with its full Z Coil series. Check the coil resistance printed on your tank, as the screen will show you what it reads once fitted.

Sub-ohm and RDL tanks generally work best with higher-VG e-liquid, so shortfills are the usual match. Check your tank's guidance for the wattage range that suits each coil.
